Kickstarter helps me to fund collections of products I could usually not afford to.

Kickstarter works similar to pre-orders. A campaign lasts for 30 days, during which people can 'pledge' to purchase one of the available items. This pledge is fully cancelable or editable until the end of the campaign, and you do not pay until the Kickstarter ends.

The campaign is only successful if the cumulative amount of money made from these pledges reaches a goal set at the start of the campaign. If it's unsuccessful, at the end of the campaign the pledgers will not be charged and the projet will be cancelled.
